- The prestigious Newbery Medal is awarded to a U.S. author for the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children in the preceding year. The award is named after John Newbery, the famous 18th century British publisher and bookseller. The Newbery Medal was first awarded in 1922 and is given each year by the Association of Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association
