- Louisa May Alcott, the much beloved author of Little Women, created strong female characters with successful careers during a time when women weren't even allowed to vote. Her belief in the basic goodness and equality of humankind as well as her philosophy of transcendentalism resonates in her stories. Strong autobiographical elements are reflected in her tales and their sequels. The importance of family -- their support in bad times, and their celebration of the good -- plays an important role in her novels, where tragic moments are tempered by gently humorous ones. Start with: Little Women
- Louisa May Alcott's best known for her intelligent and moving fiction for older kids and teens, whose main themes are family, friendship, and coming of age. Her adult fiction ranges from dramatic thrillers to atmospheric novels exploring the societal roles of strong women. Her nonfiction is biographical (as is much of her fiction), recounting, for instance, her Civil War nursing experiences. Alcott's optimism, transcendentalism, and belief in humanity's basic equality and goodness come through strongly in all her work; the result is feminist, humane, and highly relatable.
