- Summary
- NOW SCTTERED IN SMALL COMMUNITIES IN NROTHERN INDIANA, THEEASTERN MIAMI Indians, once a well-known tribe, have lived in underserved obscuritysince the 1840's. In recent years they have become more visible as they havesought restoration of the treaty rights and have revitalized their culture. Thepost-removal history of the Indiana Miami tribe is a rich texture of social, legal, and economic history, much enhanced by folklore and a rich series of photographicimages. The history of the Miami Indiansbefore the Trail of Tears has deeply influenced the present-day tribe and itsability to persist in modern America. When first contacted by French explorersthe Miami were living near today's Green bay, Wisconsin, where they fled from Iroquoisraids of their homeland south of Lake Michigan. By 1700 they had moved back tonorthern Indiana where they have lived now for three centuries. The Miami cededmost of Indiana in a series of treaties before and after the War of 1812.Euroamerican settlers disrupted their way of life, leading to a time ofviolence. Chiefs Richardville andLafontaine led Miami resistance removal until 1846. Miami chiefs negotiated theexemption of half the tribe from the Trail of Tears and provided refuge to manymore who returned form Kansas. As a result, the great majority of the Miamipeople remain in their tribal homeland today. Legal Tragedy Struck the IndianaMiami Tribe in 1897 when their treaty rights were abruptly terminated. Their effortto regain status under federal Indian law has involved them intimately intwentieth-century American Indian history. At the same time, tribal history hasbeen enriched through pageants, complex family histories and genealogy, and aleadership that has sacrificed personal well-being for the group.
