- After Virginia's mother is killed in a freak riding accident, her father sells the offending mare, Twister, and forbids Virginia to ever ride. When Twister later dies giving birth to a foal, Virginia breaks the ban and grooms Twister's offspring, Stormy, to compete in the big Memorial Day 50 Mile Endurance Race
